A Miracle
In 2023, Helen formed “My Advocate,” an official NGO (Nongovernmental Organization) for abandoned babies after three babies were found in Kabwe in a short time period. These babies had to be relocated over an hour from Kabwe because there was nowhere to take them. One little girl in particular, the first of the three found, she’s kept close to her heart. The girl is 3 years old now, and we visited at the orphanage that received her when she was released from the hospital. Her name, Miracle, reflects her story.
One day, some men were out hunting bush mice. They found a spot they thought would bring them success, so they pushed the shovel into the ground. Then they heard something like a cry.
They didn’t know what was going on as the soil seemed to move and they were initially frightened. When they investigated, they found the shovel had hit the top of a baby’s skull. The baby, buried alive, was Miracle. Miracle was taken to the hospital where she made a full recovery, although the scar from the shovel remains. I saw the scar, in both her initial baby pictures and in person.
This, and the two babies found shortly after, is why Helen felt she had to do something, be an advocate for “the least of these,” and form a home in Kabwe.
The home, pictured above, needs to be finished before it can receive a house mom and babies. It’s on a plot of land Helen inherited. The plot is on the opposite side of Kabwe compared to Helen and Alfred’s home. This plot has a small two-room home on the property that is complete, but insufficient for receiving children.
The funds received since returning home are likely sufficient to finish construction, and to get furniture and other household needs.
